The 4th of July picnic was tough to prepare for since Grandad Mike broke his back in mid-June. Even in perfect health, hosting an event for 60 plus people during the hottest time of the year was getting to be more than Amma and Grandad wanted to handle. Thankfully, the necessary decision was made for this year to be the last. It was bittersweet when Amma made the announcement before the prayer, but I think everyone understood. I love tradition, and the only time I ever missed a picnic was when I worked the day shift at Belew's, but even I'm excited to celebrate in other....hopefully cooler, by the pool...ways.
