Day 5 - Kings Canyon and Sequoia

Day 5 started similar to Day 4.  Our plan was to spend the entire day at Sequoia National Park.  We packed up and left our rental house around 7:00 to make the 3 hour drive into Sequoia via Kings Canyon National Park, only to get there to find out that the snow blocked and closed the road leading into Sequoia.  The park ranger told us we could still make it, but we would have to back track and drive 3 more hours.  We took a quick break from driving and checked out General Grant in Kings Canyon, and it was magnificent...especially in the snow.

Considering that Sequoia was top on my list for the trip, we decided to make the drive to get there.  It was a really long way, but most of the trip was surrounded by beautiful fields full of produce.  We did our fair share of Googling to figure out some of the plants, and I think we were all pretty surprised to see so many different crops.  We stopped at a fruit stand and bought a huge container of fresh cherries, and everyone loved them...especially the girls.  We also stopped on the side of the road and grabbed a few oranges off the ground.  We didn't see a sign telling us not to, and they were just too irresistible.  Pookie was afraid they were sprayed with something poisonous, but that didn't stop the rest of us from having a few slices....so worth the risk!

We finally arrived at Sequoia at 3:00 in the afternoon...8 hours after leaving the house.  The fog was so thick we couldn't see more than a few feet in front of us, but the General Sherman tree was absolutely incredible.  I can't even begin to describe it.  Not only is it the largest tree in the world based on volume, it is 275 feet tall and measures 36 feet in diameter.  For size reference, I took a picture of Grandad Mike standing at the base. The snow, even though it was cold and super inconvenient, made for such a memorable and unique experience.
