Our summer schedule made it almost impossible to find time for a family trip, but somehow we were able to sneak away for four nights right before school started. We planned our trip around some of the states that the girls had never been to. We flew to Albuquerque and took a road trip to Omaha.
On our first day in Albuquerque, we found the cutest grilled cheese shop and rode a ski lift to the top of the Sandia Peak. The views were so pretty and everyone loved exploring. We started our second day at Bandelier National Monument, and we were all surprised at how much fun we had. We hiked the main trail and climbed 5 ladders up 140 feet on the side of a cliff to the Alcove House at the top. On the second ladder I started regretting our choice to take our 5 year old, but she was amazing! We switched our line up going down, so I was far enough back that I couldn't see her going down with Craig! Cam had the best quotes and one liners on our trip, but my favorite was when she saw a preserved, stone home in the ground. She said, "You know that guy in the Bible with the rainbow coat, Joseph? I bet he was in that hole!"
We had a great dinner and photo shoot in Santa Fe, before starting the roadtrip portion of our trip. There aren't a whole lot of exciting sights between Albuquerque and Omaha, but we had a great time as a family...and luckily we are just nerdy enough to enjoy this kind of trip! On Friday we went to "Amarillo by Morning" (yes we sang the song in the car) and ate at the Big Texan. 4 out of 5 Robinsons loved it. On Saturday morning we got the heck out of Dodge (Dodge City, KS - home of the Boot Hill museum - aka the place our kids did not want to tour.) We ended our trip by crossing the bridge into Iowa to check that state off our list, before staying our last night in Omaha. We were hoping to squeeze in the afternoon at the zoo, but it was 100 degrees and everyone was pretty tired.
One of my favorite parts of the trip was when Carter and I shocked Craig and Charley by singing every word to "American Pie."
