Each year the entire Rutland staff nominates and votes on three 5th grade students for the Character Award, and the awards are revealed during the 5th Grade Promotion Ceremony. Two of the recipients' teachers write a description about them giving reasons on why they deserve the award, and the student's name is revealed at the end. Often times the kids can figure out who it's about mid-description. The third recipient description started with "Her 4th grade, Ms. Foote...". I thought it could possibly be Carter, but thankfully Courtney Eller was convinced it was Carter and immediately started videoing. It's not surprising that Carter started thinking about all of the possibilities of girls from her 4th grade class and never imagined it was for her. It wasn't until she heard her 5th grade teacher's name that she (and most of the students) realized they were talking about her.
Carter loves people, and she truly is the most thoughtful and loving kid. She's the first to congratulate a teammate or friend, and the first to check on or encourage someone. We are incredibly proud of her and so thankful for her heart of gold!
Her 4th grade teacher Mrs. Foot wrote:
She is a natural leader who consistently steps up to help others with kindness and grace. Her presence helped create a strong sense of community in our classroom, where everyone felt included, valued, and supported. She leads by example, guiding her classmates with respect and empathy. She is intentional about making sure no one is left out. Her positivity shines through each day and she leaves a lasting impact on everyone around her. She haas made our school a better place to learn and grow.
Her 5th grade teacher Miss Dutch wrote:
Genuine and positive, Carter is truly a young lady of excellence and character. Character is carefully molded through our choices, behavior, values, and interactions, but character is nothing without consistency. Carter's character has been strengthened by consistency. Consistently kind - Carter gives a friendly smile, loving hug, or thoughtful compliment to anyone and everyone, peers and adults alike. She has an eye for others and excels in looking for ways to help them out or cheer them up. Consistently determined - Carter has an attitude of gratitude, one that sees challenges in the classroom, on the field, in a race, on the stage, or with her friends as opportunities to preserve and grow. Consistently responsible - Carter has taken on a lot of leadership in her involvements this school year and is reliable in them, while also being honest and accountable when she has come up short. Perhaps my favorite part though is that she is consistently humble - Carter has such talents and heart to offer but doesn't act in pride; she is the first to lend a helping hand and give away her time and talents in service to others. Her character is evidence of conscientious choices day in and day out, guided by her loving family and other adults and friends who carefully speak into her life, and she is so deserving of this recognition, a blessing to know and love.
